Why I Do Not Like Your Red Cups, Starbucks

Dear Starbucks,

I love red. I wear red lipstick every day. I have driven a red Beetle for the past five years. My house is filled with accents of red, from my iPad mini’s cover to linen pillows and cashmere throws.

But, I do not love your red cups.

Particularly when their arrival is announced November 1. Are we supposed to go from Halloween’s Pumpkin Spice lattes to Christmas’ Peppermint Mochas with no nod whatsoever to Thanksgiving?

I feel pushed to move as quickly as possible from one holiday to the next, barely allowed to notice the one we should be currently enjoying. It is all I can do to preserve my peace, to observe Thanksgiving in my heart, by trying not to feel thrust headlong into an upcoming holiday while skipping this one.

My suggestion? In November, announce the presentation of brown cups. Let us enjoy the colors of Autumn, the crispness of fallen leaves, the riches presented to us before the arrival of Christmas.

Then I will celebrate good cheer. When it’s time.

Not a Book Review, Not an Ad, Just My New Favorite Starbucks Beverage

While going through the drive-through at Starbucks, on an early morning before work, I’ve been torn between ordering a latte or a cappuccino. The latte is often too weak; the cappuccino not hefty enough. Neither seems to fully satisfy.

But on January 6, while checking the Starbucks app on my iPhone,  I was introduced to the Flat White. It’s quite possibly the most perfect drink of all:

It is not an acid swish of coffee such as an espresso can sometimes be. It is not a sugary, ice-cream flavored icky concoction covered with whipped cream and sprinkles. It is like what I drank when I lived in Europe: thick and rich and full of real coffee flavor. Starbucks describes it as thus:

The Starbucks® Flat White is an espresso beverage made with two ristretto shots, combined with a thin layer of velvety steamed whole milk and finished with a latte art dot.  A ristretto shot delivers a sweeter, more intense coffee flavor.  Starbucks baristas perfectly steam milk into creamy micro-foam and carefully free pour to allow the espresso to rise to the top of the beverage for a bold coffee flavor with a sweeter finish. So, I’m just sayin’ what I order now, and will order forever more. Perhaps you’ll like it, too.
