What Ideal Bookshelf Would You Commission?

Seen here this morning, are the following shelves:

Book club shelf

Children’s shelf

Tolkien shelf

Travel shelf

You can buy a print already painted by Jane Mount at Ideal Bookshelf, or have one custom made for yourself. If  I was to order one, I suspect it would be a shelf of my Japanese literature, or one of Russian classics, or one combining C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkein, and Madeleine L’Engle, but what would you choose?

  1. This is SO cool. I might take a Dickens shelf…or just a best-loved classics shelf with Dickens, Austen, Bradbury, Oates, and others.

  2. I'd probably go with my collection of Jane Eyre editions. Of course, I'd need a few more before I commissioned one of these, but I love them.

  3. I love this! I'd probably have a Russian lit one or a compilation of all my prettiest editions… I remember spotting the Ideal Bookshelf book in my bookshop and spending so long flicking through it!

  4. I love this idea! My collection would include my favorites – Vonnegute, Rhys, Irving, Murakami, Ogawa. It would be a mish-mash of my faves 🙂

  5. I really do like this idea. I think my 'ideal' shelf might change over the years though. Some I would pick because I like them (Pride and Prejudice) and others I would pick because of who gave them to me (Wuthering Heights). It would be a mix of modern and older books. It would be interesting to do one as a chronology of changing tastes and interests over a period of years…maybe for a child as they grow up…as a gift when they start college, university or move away. Your site is always interesting and inspiring, Bellezza.

  6. I am kind of tempted to go for totally uniformity just to see what that looks like. Like a shelf of NYRB Classics, or vintage orange Penguins. I love all the variety of these mixed shelves, there is just something perverse in me that wants to see what the uniformity would look like.

  7. Love this idea. My shelf would have such variety. Sort of like the eclectic surroundings of my entire home. But I do have a particular shelf in my living room of favorites. From Erma Bombeck to The Mists of Avalon, The Prince of Tides, Crossing to Safety, Truman Capote stories, and… well, it is quite a long shelf.

  8. This is fabulous! I'd love the first, the book club shelf. If I had to choose one genre though, it would be a fantasy shelf, right from the classics to the contemporaries.

  9. I love this! The book is fun to peruse, if you ever happen upon it in a store. Lots of great “shelves.” I'm not sure what I'd want for my own print. Probably my Top Twenty Lifetime Favorites. Of course, how could I narrow it down to just 20?

  10. Cool! I'd probably commission a print of favorites. I like the Travel print best, but a print with book spines wouldn't thrill my heart unless it contained books I loved . . . so one without at least one Simon Van Booy book would not be acceptable. 🙂
