In Which The Mundane are Made Spectacular By Silver

No books for me this year. I don’t think people would presume to know which books to buy me unless it’s those of you who read my blog. My husband doesn’t read, my mother relies on what I’ve passed on to her, my son likes fantasy and my father likes the Chicago Tribune. So, when it comes to buying books I’m on my own. No complaints, mind you, I’m always rather too well stocked.

What I did receive this year came in silver:

Can you tell what it is?

It’s a purse!  A purse! I love it!!

“But, it’s so small,” you might say. “What could you possibly carry around in that?

Well, duh, I can carry this:

It’s a lipstick! A lipstick! From Guerlain; I love it!!

The top flips open to reveal two mirrors (um, a bit more than I might want to see, but anyway) and then out comes the color:

So beautiful…

The last gift I received was a laptop, in red, but my husband is trying to set it up for me. From the looks of it, he’ll be busy for a while, so more on that later. When I write my first post in the living room instead of being crunched into the corner of the guest room with the kitties sniffing about.

Did you receive anything that thrills you?

  1. I love your gift. It's beautiful and original. My mom always insist on buying me the "practical" gifts that I won't buy myself since I rather have books. So this year she bought me several pairs of pajamas. They're definitely my favorite presents.

  2. I LOVE the purse and the lipstick! I am a silver girl, so that is right up my alley!!!my favorite gifts: a glass angel from Murano of my mom's. She gave each of us something of hers…..LOVED it, so special. some funky chip $ dip trays. But my most favorite gift was listening to my kids tell where gave their Christmas $$. We started a tradition last year where we give our kids the $$ we would spend on their large gift, then they have till Christmas to give it away. Instead of opening a gift Christmas morning, we tell where we gave the $$. I will be posting on it Monday or Tuesday…..priceless.

  3. I received only one book, a book about the art of novel writing, but that is fine because I have too many books waiting for my attention already. This Christmas, I received so many wonderful gifts, too many wonderful gifts. I also enjoyed very much the goodwill of the sales people at Macy's, where I shopped and was amazed at the discounts!!

  4. What lovely gifts…and a laptop! Enjoy! I did receive books under the tree which were on my wishlist (Cranford and Diary of a Provincial Lady) but not too many hazard a guess (so I received gift cards which I can't wait to go bookshopping with). I hope it was a wonderful day for you and your family.

  5. The purse and lipstick is are truly beautiful – but I am anxious to see the photo of the red laptop :)I only received one book – but about 3 bookstore gift cards – so once we thaw out from all the snow I plan to do some major shopping.Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend!

  6. Beautiful! Those gifts are really gorgeous and unique, and I *heart* them. Congrats on the laptop as well, and enjoy the freedom to roam. I was excited about a number of gifts this year, but the big daddy of them all is a Nook eReader which will wing its way to me on January 4th. I can't wait!

  7. Oh that purse and lipstick are just way too cool! Very stylish! But the laptop, now that would get my engine revving. I got a netbook this year, which is almost more joy than I can handle!

  8. Why, yes, I did get something that delights me – new biography of Dickens! Not that it's the next book in the queue but I won't wait a year before reading it.By the way, I really like the new look of your blog.

  9. I love the purse! I received a teeny purse from my 70 yr old aunt this year – it is adorable, black & shiny with little pearls dangling down from the tiny strap. The best part was inside – lip balm, $20, and a note saying that she got the purse free when she bought a new bra and hopes I will like it 🙂 I don't get too many books, for the same reasons as you… but I have so many that is okay with me. I get cute gifts from my family; we give each other little things and it is nice not to have huge pressures to buy lots of STUFF

  10. One of my favorite gifts is a $50 spa gift card. I have never had my nails done before so I think I am going to get that done. I received clothes and pajamas too. The only books I got were a 500 types of cupcake book and the Martha Stewart cupcake cookbook. I have been on a cupcake kick this year. My Mom also found for me a carrier that will hold 24 cupcakes and fold down to half its size to store. I am really excited about that. 🙂

My husband bought me one for my birthday this year and it's been wonderful!I got practical gifts…one of my favorites is a much needed new Cuisinart Coffee machine from my husband which I cannot wait to try out. My son bought me a lovely "Moms are great" coffee mug so I'm all set!

  12. Sara, that is just a brilliant plan you thought of for your children. I love when the focus is more on giving than receiving, which of course, you'd never be able to tell from my rather self-centered post. You and your husband are awesome parents. (I am glad that you can enjoy the silver. 😉

  13. Oooh what wonderful presents they are just lovely. I received one book which I really wanted and have another one coming via order that I wanted too, it appears someone had been doing so research on my blog which was sweet. Other than that I got lots of things, my favourite being my snood, not the priciest present I got but something have been hankering after for ages.

  15. Your lipstick reminds me of one my mom used in the sixties. A shade of red of course. Like you, I love Mad Men and the sixties and thought you might enjoy knowing this bit of fancy. Also like you, I write on a red laptop. It too likes the shade red.

  16. I got a laptop from Mom too this Christmas and she's buying me clothes (YAY!) next week. Congratulations on the laptop! I envy your laptop's color. I wanted some color for my laptop but HP doesn't have any or it's rare.. So I got black. I quite regret it. I should have the white one never mind the fact that dirt is visible.. But I love my laptop. Who doesn't?

  17. What an absolutely beautiful gift! I love it! And the lipstick too! As far as books go, since I started my blog last year, my relatives cringe at the thought of buying me a book! "I read so many", but it's just so nice when I receive one! It's the book bloggers 'curse'! 😀 I think I might like silver though….

  18. Simply gorgeous! A tremendous gift. Like you, I receive very few books because those near and dear either think that they would not know what to buy me or that I could not possibly NEED more books, as if the desire is about need. 🙂 Always anticipating that perfect book gift though. And did receive a few treasures this past year.Happy reading!

  19. Looks like you've got yourself some awesome gifts this Christmas. We don't do gifts very often at home, but we did have an awesome time, spent with family friends and good food. We even got to see photographs of when my mum's friend went to Nepal for 10 days to provide voluntary medical treatment (surgery etc), which was very humbling.Have a great New Year's too!

  20. Dear M, Stopping by to wish you a (continued) Merry Christmas. Your gift is gorgeous and yes, I rec'd several gifts that thrilled me but may use that as a blog entry since I have become such a sporadic blogger rather than a daily one. Thinking of you, reading a lot in front of the fire and wondering if we'll all have occasion to get together – a blogger rendez-vous of sorts. In the meantime, Happy New Year, too and enjoy, enjoy and enjoy these beautiful days full of joy and spirit.

  22. So, those are wonderful! I love the purse. And have fun with the new computer when it's up and running! The one thing I got that was both a thrill and a total surprise was a T-shirt from my nieces that says "Palin 2012". The niece who ordered it for me is the liberal and she said it burned her fingers to type in Palin 2012! Gotta love that she'd do that for me. I'm glad you had a wonderful day, Bellezza. I hope the new year is nothing but bright and peaceful for you!cjh
